Consider a semen analysis if you
- Are planning to start a family and want to know where you stand
- Have tried to conceive for 6 to 12 months without success
- Have low libido, erection problems or low testosterone
- Had mumps, an injury, surgery or treatment in the groin or testicles
Tell your doctor before the test if you
- Had a fever or illness in the last three months, which can lower the count for a while
- Use testosterone, steroids or bodybuilding supplements
- Take regular medicines or have had chemotherapy

Is the test private and confidential?
Yes. You collect the sample alone in a private room. Samples are handled only by medical staff and your results are seen only by you and your doctor.
How do I prepare for the test?
Avoid ejaculation for 2 to 7 days. Avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 to 48 hours and saunas or hot baths for 48 hours before the test, and tell your doctor about any medicines or supplements you take.
How long do results take?
Most results are ready the same day, depending on the clinic schedule. Your doctor reviews the findings with you privately.
When should I do a semen analysis?
If you are planning a family, have tried to conceive for 6 to 12 months without success, have low libido or erection problems, or have a medical history that may affect fertility. Some men test simply to know.
My partner has already been tested. Do I still need one?
Yes. Men are involved in about half of infertility cases, and a semen analysis is quick and simple. Testing both partners early saves time and stress.
What if my result is low?
